City Overview
This is your main screen. Here you can see your city close up and access the different Control Panels and Sidebars.
You can hover over any building to see its name and level. Clicking on a building will take you to a more detailed information screen. See Buildings for detailed information on what each building does.
Control Panels/Sidebars
Main Control Panel
The left sidebar is your Main Control Panel. You can access the City Overview, Messages, Reports, Alliance page, player Settings, Alliance Forum (if you belong to an alliance), Ranking, Help, Forum (Grepolis Forum), Premium page (to buy and manage premium), and Logout from this sidebar.
Action Sidebar
This sidebar is on the right of your City View screen. Here you can see what units are currently in your city, troop movement, and trade movements.
You can cancel attacks from this screen as well. Please note you can only cancel an attack within the first 10 minutes. After that your troops can't "hear" you and will continue on. All troops movements to include support, land attacks, sea attacks, and incoming attacks will show up.
To cancel an attack click on the city's name in the action bar. Another screen will pop up with a Cancel button on the bottom. Your troops will turn around and begin their journey home.
Resource Bar
This bar is at the top of your page. It shows how much timber, stone, and silver you currently have in your Warehouse. It also shows your free population, how much your warehouse can hold, how many favors you have accumulated, and the God or Goddess you have chosen. You can hover over any of the resources, including favors, to see how many you are producing per hour. You can click on any of these to take you directly to the coordinating building that produces these resources. Clicking on the warehouse capacity will show you how much longer til your warehouse is maxed out in each resource.
The Map
There are two maps in Grepolis. The Island Overview and the Mini Map. For more information see Maps.
Island Overview
An overview of your surroundings so you can see who your neighbors are, where your city is located, and where all the farming villages are. Your city is always marked with an orange banner, members of your alliance with a blue banner and the cities of other players with a brown one. Every player gets a city on the coast. The interior of the country has farming villages that are played by the computer. They are marked by a green banner.
Mini Map
On the Mini Map, you can get an even larger overview of your surroundings. Here cities are represented by colored points. You can recognize your own city by the orange point.
In order to zoom in on a point, double-click on it on the Mini Map.
Population
Your current free population is shown to the right of your resource bar. Free population is needed to construct buildings and build military units. Population is determined by your Farm level. The higher level of Farm the more population you have. Building a farm takes 0 population.
To maximize population so you can have more troops you may want to do the following
- Research Plow in the Academy. This gives you 200 more population.
- Construct Thermal Baths. This will raise your population by 5%
Resources
There are 3 types of resources in Grepolis: Timber, Rock and Silver. These resources are used for building in your city and for making military units. Silver is also used for spying other players.
Each island will have one resource it is plentiful in and one that is rare. These are shown by a + and - sign in the upper right corner of the resource on your resource bar. The resource bonus and penalty does not come into effect until you build a level 20 camp/quarry/mine.
Resource Buildings
The 3 types of resources all have available buildings you can upgrade in your city in order to harvest more of these per hour. Timber Camp for timber, Quarry for stone, and Silver Mine for silver. The higher the level of these buildings the more you harvest per hour.
Additional Resources
Besides having a Timber Camp, Quarry or Silver Mine you can get additional resources by attacking or trading with farming villages or other players, or by using the Marketplace.
Farming villages will be your earliest and easiest route to extra resources. Farm Farm Farm! These resources are free and as long as you do not lower the mood too much on a farming village you can farm to your hearts content before they strike back. See below for further information on village moods.
Farming Villages
Farming villages are computer played cities on your island. There are 8 on each island.
To start an attack on a farming village go the the Island Overview screen and pick a village. Farming villages closer to you will require less travel time than villages further away. The basic information screen of the village will appear. This shows the Mood, Strength and rate of Trade available for that village. Choose the Attack tab (2nd tab) and Resource Looting to send units to this village to gather resources.
Now you must decide which units to send. You want to send units that have a high carrying capacity so that you can gather more resources. To choose the units you are sending you may either click on the units icon to send all of those available units or type in manually in the text box under the unit icon how many of those units you wish to send. You may send a variety of units, one specific class of unit, and as many from each class as you have available.
When you select the unit(s) you are sending the travel time will be displayed. This is for one away travel. Units returning will take as much time to return as they did to travel to the farming village.
If you attack a farm too often its mood will fall dangerously low. Eventually the villagers will defend themselves. The lower the mood and the higher the strength of a village the more opposition you will meet.
- Tip: At 100% mood and 100% strength the most resources you can get off a farming village is 6000 total.
Mood and Strength
Mood
The better the mood, the less likely it is the farming village will defend itself. Only you can influence the mood towards farming villages.
- This means the mood for each individual farming village is determined by each player individually. If you hit one farm over and over the mood will keep dropping. On the other hand, the players that haven't hit that farm will have 100% mood on that particular farm.
Strength
The strength of the farming village shows how well the farming village is doing. All players on this island can influence the strength.
- This means every player that hits that farming village takes away from its strength and the strength is shared island wide for all players. Not individually like mood. If one player strengthens a farm all players on the island benefit from it.
The greater the strength, the more resources you can gain in total
- If the strength is very low you will not always bring back a full haul from looting. This depends on the strength and the number/types of units you send. You can send 10 Swords there and get a full load. Send 12 Archers and you may not since Archers carry more.
The greater the strength, the lower is the reduction of the mood during an attack.
- The higher the strength the less mood will be deducted when you loot the farm (than would regularly).
The greater the strength, the lower is the reduction of the strength during an attack.
- The higher the strength the less strength will be deducted when anyone loots the farm (than would regularly).
The greater the strength, the more soldiers will be on the defense if there is a resistance.
- If you have low mood and high strength this is a recipe for disaster. The farmers are in low spirits but have the strength to fight you off. This is when you will be attacked and lose troops. This is a player by player scenario as only strength is shared, not mood. You may get attacked by a farm you loot often while another player will not.
Strengthening a Village
If the strength of your villages are low then you may want to strengthen them by sending units. To do so go to the Island Overview screen and click on the village you want to strengthen. Click on the Attack tab (2nd tab) and choose Increase Strength.
Strengthening a village counts as an attack. Your forces are invading the farm in order to make the villagers work harder and produce more.
Farming Players
To successfully farm players you must first attack them and have remaining units left to carry resources back to your city. You attack another player just as you attack a farming village. Go to the Island Overview Screen and click on the city you wish to attack. Click on the Attack tab. Choose which and how many troops you wish to send. Wait for your troops to travel to the city. Battles are instantaneous so you will get a report as soon as your troops enter the enemy city.
You can carry back as many resources as your remaining units allow as long as those resources are not protected by the Warehouse. The higher the level the Warehouse the more resources are protected.
Once you clear out another players city of troops you can continue to go back again and again for resources. The player you attacked may rebuild his military. If that is the case you must continue to clear out his forces.
See Attacking Other Players for more information.
Farming Reports
A report will be generated when you attack a farming village. The report will show which city you attacked from, which farming village you are attacking, the attacking units, the mood and strength of the village, and how many of each resource and resources in total were obtained.
If the farming village defended itself the report will also show how many units you lost. For more information about reports attacking another player see Attacking Other Players
Best Farming Units
Every unit has a different carrying capacity. To see which units carry what amount go to Unit Summary. You want to send units that carry the most resources to maximize your time and profits.
Early on your best units to farm villages will be Swords followed by Archers. After you have the technology you can start to build Horsemen and Chariots.
Never farm another players city with Swords or Archers. You will always lose at least 1 unit, even if they have no wall. The higher the wall the more units you will lose. Send Slingers, Horsemen, Chariots and Mythical Units to farm other players.
Marketplace
Each level of Marketplace allows you to trade 500 resources. See Trading for more information.
Trading
Trading with farming villages or other players is a great way to get the specific resources you need. Not all trades are a 1 for 1 deal or a 1:1 ratio so pay attention to what you are getting for what you are giving.
- Trade ratio is usually simplified by abbreviations. 1:1 means 1 resource for 1 other type of resource. 1:2 is giving 1 resource and receiving 2 in return. 2:1 is giving 2 resources and receiving 1 in return. The abbreviation used in the marketplace and farming villages is a decimal number. 1 is a 1:1 ratio. 2 is a 1:2 ratio. If you see .5 that is a 2:1 ratio.
Trade with Farming Villages
Every farming village on your island will trade with you once you have a Market and if the villages mood is 80% or better. Each farming village will trade one specific resource for another specific resource. These are assigned and do not change.
To trade with a farming village to to Island Overview and find a village that meets your trade requirements. You can hover the mouse over the village to see its mood, strength and what it trades in and current trade ratio. Click on the village, then click on the Trading tab (3rd tab).
In the picture example this village trades Silver for Stone. This means you must give the village Stone in order to receive Silver back. The trade ratio for this village is currently 1:1.25. This means for every 1 piece of Stone you trade you will get 1.25 pieces of Silver back. Essentially for every 2000 resources you trade you can get 500 free resources of something else.
Every time you trade with a farming village the trade ratio will go down .1 for every 100 resources traded. The ratio will rise back up over time at .1 per hour.
Other information on this screen is your trading capacity. This one is 2500 which represents a level 5 Marketplace (500 per level). The traveling time of 9:45 and the arrival time are on the bottom of the screen.
*Tip: You can circle through the farming villages for free resources. Trade timber for stone, then stone for silver, then silver for timber.
Trade with Other Players
You can trade with other players on the Marketplace. Click on your Marketplace in the City Overview screen. The Marketplace screen will appear showing you what other players are offering to trade.
On this screen you can search for the specific resource you need. On the left hand side under Search click on the resource you want to receive. All offers will be sorted showing you the trades currently available with that resource being offered. You can further narrow down the list by picking the resource you have to trade under Offer. Narrow the list further by setting the Delivery Time and the Trade Ratio. You can also sort the offers by Delivery Time and Trade Ratio to find the closest and best deals.
Let's pretend we are looking for timber and have silver to trade. On the picture the first player is offering 1000 timber for 1000 silver. That is exactly the type of trade we are looking for. This is a 1:1 trade ratio. This transaction will take 29 minutes and 37 seconds to complete. What if you only have 500 silver to trade though? Just use the slider bar on the right or type in 500. You can do partial transactions, no need to do the full amount. Click the green arrow and the resources are on their way to and from the respective cities. You can track the progress of this trade on your Action Bar.
You can begin trading with other players with a level 1 Marketplace. You may not create an offer to trade until you have a level 5 Marketplace. You can send resources directly to another player with a level 10 Marketplace.
If you have a level 5 Marketplace and want to offer up your resources for trade then click on the Create Offer tab. Here you can choose what you are offering up, what you want in return and the maximum delivery time. Now you have to wait for someone to accept your offer before the transaction can take place.
