Talk:Beginners Guide 2
I have questions about the contents of this page. For example, the writer tells people not to research Hoplites. Fine I guess... if you NEVER plan on being attacked by Horsemen. They also recommend building Chariots as a staple unit, which seems odd, because it's fairly well established that Horse are superior on a cost per Population basis for Offense, and Swords/Archers are superior for defense. I keep of few Chariot handy myself in case anyone on my island need quick backup, but by the time you've made PAs or cleared your island for Farming, Chariots seem like a novelty at best, and an expensive indulgence at worst. They're basically the Heavy Cav of Grepolis- a unit that says "Hey, I have a LOT of resources just floating around."
Furthermore, it says not to build your barracks past 15. Again, this seems to assume that you're never be attacked, or attack anyone. I've found that a level 20 barracks combined with the Trainer upgrade isn't just useful, it's almost mandatory if you're going to be doing any sort of fighting.
Regarding the Market- well, it's hard to know for sure because we don't have hard numbers, but having a higher Market level appears, at least, to speed up the Trade Percent recovery time. I could be wrong on that, but it certain seems to be the case. I tend to just put all my Mining effort into whatever the Bonus resource is on my Island, and then use the Merchant to trade it for the other two resources. Caligula 15:04, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
I agree on the whole hoplite/chariot. It's already been shown that the hoplite is a better attacker AND defender although at heavy penalties to farming abilities. At the least it needs to be stated that the hoplite is the best sharp offensive unit. Currently this guide will lead new players to believe that hoplites are a trash unit when that is far from the truth. They are an integral part of any army. Aurave 15 April 2010
